KEEP ME FROM THE PRESUMPTUOUS SIN

Psalm 19:13 says, “Keep me from sinning. Do not let anyone gain control over me. Then I will be blameless, and I will be free from any great offense.” – GWT

I noted that some translations were presumptuous to leave out the word “presumptuous” when David is speaking of a specific category of sins.

The ASV has it right, saying, “Keep back thy servant also from presumptuous sins ; Let them not have dominion over me: Then shall I be upright, And I shall be clear from great transgression.

It is a presumptuous sin to presume you can do something when God has not authorized it.

Don’t presume with God because it makes a fool of you. It puts words in the mouth of God. Oh I know God is going to be ok with this or that, when God has said no such thing.

David wanted to live only in a way that God would approve of.

We can sin the sins of commission which is to commit what God said not to. We can sin the sin of omission which is to not do what God said to do.

And we can presume to have authority to do something God didn’t give authority to. We can presume to have the authority to omit something God commanded.

To avoid the presumptuous sin, consult the Bible.
