Where does the saying come from? It sounds like something the Apostle Paul might say. I think it is a reminder to not be too judgmental of someone else’s predicament because without the grace from God you have received, you might be in the same situation.
Paul said, ‘But by the grace of God I am what I am’, 1 Cor. 15:10
Examining this saying by Paul, it is clear he present place in favor of God is by God’s grace. Without grace, Paul would not be what he is. And so even if that saying in the title above is not specifically in the Scriptures, it is a true saying.
Now there is an important factor required to be what God’s grace makes possible and that is your faith. Without faith, you won’t be receptive to taking hold of God’s grace. Paul was what he was by God’s grace because when God said to him, for example, go and wait in Damascus and you will be told what to do, Paul went in faith. So faith is very important to receive saving grace.
There is also another aspect of receiving grace before a person has even opened himself up to God. God who knows all things, can shine his grace on the path of a person who He knows will be receptive later. By faith I personally believe that my later teen years were being watched over by God even though I was utterly lost and had no clue how to get out of the darkness. I believe God was protecting me, opening doors, holding off dangers, keeping me alive until I would be at that point of desperation when a person can only look up and cry out. When I reached that point, He answered and saved me by His grace.
