UPHOLDING THE DESIGN OF MARRIAGE

Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, and said, ‘FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH’?” – Mt. 19:4,5

An AP story by Kevin Gill says, with 99% of the precincts reporting, that 78% of Louisianians voted for the amendment to protect marriage–and ban gay marriage. The “Christian conservatives” are credited in the article with conducting an “intense grass roots lobbying campaign.” The same is happening around the country.

Similar amendments to ban same-sex marriage are on ballots in Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon and Utah. Petitions in Ohio are still being verified.

Why are states having elections to change the Constitution? Reacting to the overwhelming victory in Louisiana for the traditional position (which coincidently aligns with the Bible), John Rawls, a lawyer for Forum for Equality said, “many Louisianians either did not read the amendment or are so afraid of gays that they voted for this amendment anyway….” So most of the voters are uninformed or “homophobic”? That is one explanation, but it is more likely a result of their strong belief that marriage should be reserved for a man and a woman.

UPDATE:

It is now November 5, three days past the re-election of George W. Bush as President. Along with electing the President, eleven states passed constitutional amendments to limit marriage to a man and a woman. And on the same subject, the Associated press reports that the Texas Board of Education approved new health textbooks for the state’s high school and middle school students Friday after the publishers agreed to change the wording to depict marriage as the union of a man and a woman.1 Ah, progress.
