A favorite Psalm says, “Call upon Me in the day of trouble; I shall rescue you, and you will honor Me.” – Psalm 50:15
In the context, we learn that Israel scrupulously brought sacrifices that meant nothing. It was out of obligation or social convention that they continued to offer sacrifices, but their hearts were elsewhere. Their manner was offensive to God. It was as if they thought God was sustained by their actions. Their lack of faith, love, and reverence revealed that their interests were elsewhere. And though their sacrifices were many, they were a hollow shell of what they ought to have been. And in time of trouble, they would be unblessed.
In verses 14-15, we see that God rescues those who are true worshipers. They offer to God a sacrifice of praise. They “pay their vows” by remembering and keeping their covenant with God. They call on Him and He has regard for their sacrifices because they love Him with all of their heart. Only God can rescue in time of trouble.
