Worship is about giving praise and thanks to God. It is sacrifice to Him who is worthy.
“Through Him then, let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that give thanks to His name.” – Heb. 13:15
A Brother or Sister cannot remain faithful to God if worship is abandoned. The soul needs it. To worship God is necessary to the soul as air and meat are to the body. The failure to worship God creates a sickness and emptiness that will effect soul, body, and mind. A person cannot stay spiritually right who has turned from worshiping the true God for he will by default worship a lesser god. This makes the soul sick.
Worship is relational. We are the clay and He the Potter. Man and God are a child and father relationship. He is our Maker. So it is a broken relationship that does not care to give due honor to Him. And just as it is hurtful to ignore a festering wound, real or metaphor, it hurts the person who does not correct this. Whatever it takes, worship God. Let nothing hinder you from bringing your song, your prayers, your contribution, your ear to hear His Word, your remembering in the Lord’s Supper.
When we assemble to worship, there is power to overcome sin and grow spiritually. The devil knows the faith building power that is found in the fellowship of worship. The Hebrews writer said,
“24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.” (Heb. 10:24,25).
God intended that His children meet and encourage one another. The Brother or Sister who makes the decision to skip worship hurts himself more than if he suffered a physical injury for that would not affect him eternally. No person who has any say over his life should choose to miss assembling with Christians for worship.
What’s that? You think it isn’t hurting you when you skip worship? You are fooled to think this. How is it that God gave the Lord’s Supper as a weekly reminder, knowing our forgetful hearts, and you think it doesn’t hurt you to miss it? God knows you better than you know yourself. Listen to God’s warning against forsaking the assembly:
“25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near. 26 For if we go on sinning willfully after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,” – Heb. 10:25,26
This text may refer to the wholesale desertion of worship, but it begins with a first step. A person may get away with an occasional “miss” of worship, but this is how a habit begins. I do not personally know when a person has “forsaken” worship, but I know the consequence is judgment for sinning willfully. Do you know you are commanded to worship, but have willfully chosen to stay away? This is a dangerous place to be. Repent and draw near to God as soon as possible. He is worthy and you will be blessed for doing right.
