In Billingsly’s direct attack on me, in a 9 page PDF he sent to churches of Christ (View COMPLETE DOCUMENT HERE), he offers the following to my statement that his doctrine is ridiculous:
2. MAYFIELD’S MISREPRESENTATION: “This is a ridiculous assertion by Billingsly which makes the teachings in the Sermon on the Mount to be Old Testament teaching that are, in his words, nailed to the cross. Are the words, “man shall live by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God” Old Testament only?”
BILLINGSLY’S REPLY: Yes, according to Christ’s own words in the so-called “sermon on the mount,” every word in Matthew 5:1 through Matthew 7:29 was a part of the Old Testament law of Moses and the prophets. Notice how Christ himself described his teaching in this passage. “12Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12).
So Billingsly believes that Jesus’ words “this is the law and the prophets” means that the Golden Rule is Old Testament, not New Testament teaching? Billingsly ignores the possibility that Jesus is correcting the Jews living under the Law WHILE ALSO establishing the Christian mentality and spirit.
Billingsly is so bent on distorting Jesus’ words in Matthew 19 (Divorce and Remarriage) that he will ignore all reason and common sense.
