1 “When the LORD your God brings you into the land where you are entering to possess it, and clears away many nations before you, the Hittites and the Girgashites and the Amorites and the Canaanites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and stronger than you, 2 and when the LORD your God delivers them before you and you defeat them, then you shall utterly destroy them. You shall make no covenant with them and show no favor to them. 3 Furthermore, you shall not intermarry with them; you shall not give your daughters to their sons, nor shall you take their daughters for your sons. 4 For they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods; then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you and He will quickly destroy you. 5 But thus you shall do to them: you shall tear down their altars, and smash their sacred pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire. 6 For you are a holy people to the LORD your God; the LORD your God has chosen you to be a people for His own possession out of all the peoples who are on the face of the earth.” – Deut 7:1ff
The holy people of God have always been distinct from the world. Their beliefs, lifestyles, and worship have been according to the will of God which is opposite of the world. The church of Christ is the New Testament equivalent to Israel, the chosen people of God. Peter wrote to the church:
9 But you are A CHOSEN RACE, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY. – 1 Peter 2:9-10
The principles Moses laid out for Israel to follow in regard to the world are the same principles the church follows today.
1. It’s warfare. “We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5). “19 For it is written, “I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE” (1 Cor. 1:19). 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Eph. 6:12). This is a mindset which many Christians refuse to accept. They don’t want to be at war with the ungodly world. Though Jesus said, “I did not come to bring peace, but a sword“, they still want peace with the world. Don’t be blind and foolish to think that the world isn’t out to destroy you and your family. The world wants you to accept and approve of what it is doing. Homosexuality is just one example where this is being accomplished. Darwinistic naturalism is another. The world will undermine the authority of God if you do not accept that you are at war with the world.
2. Do Not Covenant with the World. “14 Do not be bound together with unbelievers; for what partnership have righteousness and lawlessness, or what fellowship has light with darkness? 15 Or what harmony has Christ with Belial, or what has a believer in common with an unbeliever? 16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I WILL DWELL IN THEM AND WALK AMONG THEM; AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE” (2 Cor. 6:14ff). God said not to be unequally yoked to unbelievers, i.e. those who are not the body of Christ. Do we maintain the clear line between the church and the world, even between us and the denominational world? If not, are we not sinning? Do we care that our daughters and sons are marrying outside of the family of God? Moses said parents are not to permit it. But parents today submit to modern conventions instead of the will of God, and they act as if they have no say in who will be married into their family. Marriage is the 2nd most important covenant you will enter, second only to covenanting with God in Christ. Covenanting with those outside of the church are a danger that will draw your children away from God.
3. Destroy their Idols from Your Home. Moses was telling God’s people how to go forward by conquering and destroy all vestiges of the pagan world. Do no bring them into your home. Do not adopt them and make them your own. The equivalent to this in the New Testament age is the practice of the home and church. Christians, both individually and corporately, are destroying the idols they encounter. The church of Christ cannot advance the cause of Christ if it becomes enamored with the graven images and seeks to adopt them into the church. These things are Trojan Horses that once invited in set the path for more and more to enter. Soon the church will not reflect the pattern given it in the New Testament, but will instead reflect the world. When so called Christians argue to adopt things that look good, smell good, feel good, and sound good because, according to their personal wisdom, it will help to engage the world for Christ, do not follow these Christians. Moses said destroy these images, not embrace them because they wouldn’t help reach the lost. Moses said destroy them from your lives because you are a holy people. The church will cease to be the church if it looks to the gold and silver and hewn idols of the world and invite them into the church.
The world is creeping into the church and Christian home through television and movies, through sports, through school curriculum, through peers, through the biased media that hates God, through government controls, and through many others means. Anything and everything which seeks to turn the church and our families away from God are to be opposed.
Whose side are you on? If you are on the side of the world, then you are an enemy of God. If you are on God’s side, then the world is your enemy. The world is your enemy that seeks to destroy your home. It seeks to take your children’s mind and turn them against God. The world is the enemy of the church which insist that the Cross is the wisdom of God and no one comes to the God of heaven apart from Christ. Be separate from the world and draw near to all the ways of God.
