The following verse says, “13 “Behold, I am weighted down beneath you As a wagon is weighted down when filled with sheaves.” It’s pretty serious when your actions put a burden on God. To the people who would compromise the truth even by quieting the very people who are called to preach the truth are in some serious trouble. We know that not all men love the truth and they will attack and silence truth if they can. Paul said to the Romans, “For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and righteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,” Rom. 1:18.
For the building up of the body and for spreading the Gospel the evangelist has his mission from God. With the preacher, the elders also are to take care of the body of Christ to keep it strong and protected from these ravenous wolves who are a burden to God. Paul said to the Shepherds of the Ephesian church,
“28 “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood. 29 “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; 30 and from among your own selves men will arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. 31 “Therefore be on the alert, remembering that night and day for a period of three years I did not cease to admonish each one with tears. 32 “And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.”, Acts 20:28-32.
Judgment is coming upon the ravenous wolves, the false teachers, because they silenced to message of God in Amos’ day. They burdened God and God would burden them. And God will also burden those preachers, teachers, and Elders who are responsible for supporting and defending the truth of God and do not do so.
Do men of God who are supposed to be the spiritual guides get co-opted and neutered (in a manner of speech) today, even by God’s own children? Do you, O man of God, succumb to the chorus of voices that plead for you to quiet down or soften your tone regarding righteousness and judgment? Amos preached against Israel for acting with disdain towards God to the degree that they intentionally sought to silence the spiritual voices for God. Amos said,
“11Then I raised up some of your sons to be prophets and some of your young men to be Nazirites. 12But you made the Nazirite drink wine, and you commanded the prophets,, saying, ‘You shall not prophesy.’” Amos 2:11,12
As God’s man, the message of righteousness is not to be heard only by those who sit in the pews, but the light of truth needs to be preached on housetops so that ravenous wolves and powerful people feel the prick of truth too.
Presidents, Congressmen and Judges can be corrupt so that they burden God with their actions. Nothing happens in a vacuum. The corruption in the highest places of power is a burden on the weak and powerless and it is a burden to God for which God will burden them back. “6For after all it is only just for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7and to give relief to you who are afflicted and to us as well when the Lord Jesus will be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.“, 2 Thess. 1:6-9.
When President Obama arrogantly speaks against God’s design of marriage to say that he thinks men should be able to marry men, he burdens God. When Lawmakers speak arrogantly against the life of unborn children by suggesting that it is a good thing to support abortion, they burden God. When Judges say that parents have no innate right to educate their children, as if that is the sole discretion of the government, they burden God. Fathers, you are commanded by God to bring your children up to know God, Eph. 6:1-4. Children are commanded to obey their parents. Obedience to rulers and those in authority is secondary to the first command to honor your father and mother. Those who lies against God’s truth and who seek to silence the truth are storing up wrath for themselves. God will burden those who burden the righteous. Those who silence God’s messengers, the way Amaziah sought to silence Amos the sheepherder, will be burdened by God.
Where does the church stand on important societal shifts away from God’s moral law? Does the church oppose immorality wherever it arises in the world? Certainly the church is not blind to immorality or else it could not lead the lost to know the way of righteousness. In carrying out the great commission of preaching Christ to the world, there is a necessary and natural intersection with the world. The world knows this and hates the church that speaks up for what is right. The ungodly world will be happy to see the church that has become silent against the sins being committed in the king’s royal palaces. Men of God, please do not be silent. Sin in the world is a burden to God. Especially burdensome to God is it when powerful people seek to silence the preaching of the Gospel and the message of righteousness. Do not be silenced. Speak the truth from the pulpit. Speak the truth to your children. Understand that God is on your side if you are on God’s side.
