“…was it actually for Me that you fasted?” Zech7:5

This question by the LORD implied that the fasting and service by these people who professed to follow God was not done for God. They said they wept in fifth month and abstained, v.3. Though they outwardly appeared righteous, they were not. Hence the question, “was it for Me?” So later God gives the admonition to “…Dispense true justice and practice kindness and compassion each to his brother; 10 and do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger or the poor; and do not devise evil in your hearts against one another“, Zech 7:9,10. When we are acting like the world, pursuing carnal lusts and mistreating our neighbors, the weeping, fasting, singing and praising and various acts of worship cannot be to the LORD. We are not made that way. When the heart is bad, the whole body is bad. “But if your eye is bad, your whole body will be full of darkness“, Mt 6:23. Let’s make sure that our heart is true. Let us make sure that we live by the golden rule. Then when we fast and when we worship it will be unto the LORD.
