I have read many books in my life. And a number of them had to do with “self help” and usually had to do with thinking or communicating. Though I have found these to have some good thoughts that were helpful, finding the helpful parts were like mining for a gem so that when finished with the book I walked away with a single or small number of good thoughts. Some books might be ultra useful and offer a number of habits to focus on. Still, it’s like mining so you walk away with a few things that help my walk in this life. Now that’s their problem.

I’m a student of the Bible because every day of reading the Scriptures do I find another gem to guide my life. And it’s not just for matters of this life but it calls for me to be ready for the next life. Books of men, even ones with a spiritual focus, only have a few gems in their entirety, but the Bible is the motherload. Consider what the following verses have to say about the power that is in the Holy Scriptures.

“[the scriptures] are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus” 2 Tim 3:15

“in humility receive the word implanted, which is able to save your souls” Jas 1:21

“you have in obedience to the truth purified your souls” 1 Pt 1:22

“like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation” 1 Pt 2:2

“And now I commend you to God and to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up and to give you the inheritance among all those who are sanctified.” Acts 20:32

“For the word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.” Heb 4:12

“So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it.” Isaiah 55:11

““Is not My word like fire?” declares the LORD, “and like a hammer which shatters a rock?” Jeremiah 23:29

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness” 2 Tim 3:16

“which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words” 1 Cor. 2:13

“for no prophecy was ever made by an act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God.” 2 Pt 1:21

Here’s what we know. God has spoken to us. The question is are we listening? Are we reading the Bible? Some people are never going to read through the Bible; not even through the New Testament. Knowing God’s intent that it be read and knowing the power that’s in God’s word, it seems we all should have a renewed commitment to be in God’s Word so that it might guide us in our decisions and so that we might be saved by the wisdom found in it. God bless you. Dan Mayfield, M.A. Bible.
