But there is good reason to conclude that the Sabbath day rest was as temporary as were the rest of the Commandments on the tablets of stone.

“14 “So You made known to them Your holy sabbath,
And laid down for them commandments, statutes and law,
Through Your servant Moses.” Nehemiah 9:14

And Moses retold the Ten Commandments in Deuteronomy and said,

“2 The LORD our God made a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 “The LORD did not make this covenant with our fathers, but with us, with all those of us alive here today.” Deut 5.

After saying this, Moses goes on to give the Commandments that included “remember the Sabbath Day to keep it holy”.

Now when Nehemiah says God “made known” the holy Sabbath through Moses and when Moses said God “did not make this covenant with our fathers”, we can conclude that there was no injunction from the LORD to rest on the 7th day of the week until the Law was given at Mt. Sinai with Moses.

I often hear Christians pacify concerns that we are doing away with the Old Law of Moses by saying that all of the 10 Commandments are repeated in the New Testament. I don’t believe this is a good thing. It’s like trying to pacify someone who is still clinging ton circumcision by assuring them that the circumcision is repeated in the New Covenant. It’s not and neither are the Commandments on stone tablets. The Old, that one that included the command ‘thou shalt not covet’, was a ministry of death and condemnation, 2 Cor. 3:7-9. The New Covenant is a ministry of life and peace, Rom. 8:6. Does it make sense to say that God has repeated for Christians to keep the “ministry of death” and the “ministry of condemnation”? No. I do not see the Old being retold in the New. I see a New and better Covenant in the New Testament.

When it comes to the Sabbath Day, the 7th day of the week, there are some who still bind 7th day observance on people and still others who insist on calling Sunday the Sabbath. The only Sabbath rest that remains which Christians look forward to is the rest we have in heaven.

“9 So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10 For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. 11 Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience.” Heb 4:9-11.

The book of Hebrews shows us that we are to labor for the LORD and we have a Sabbath rest in heaven. Until then, there is no Sabbath for the Christian. There is no injunction from God for Christians to keep the Sabbath.

In case you are still thinking Sunday is the Sabbath and follow from that to the conclusion that Christians don’t have to worship on the first day of the week, you err. I have already said that Sunday, the first day of the week, is not the Sabbath. Sabbath was on the last day of the week. But there is a “Lord’s Day” that remains which is the day Jesus was raised from the dead, Mt 28:1 (read the verse).
