RIGHTEOUSNESS, SELF-CONTROL, AND THE COMING JUDGMENT: REASONING WITH THE LOST, Dan Mayfield

24But some days later Felix arrived with Drusilla, his wife who was a Jewess, and sent for Paul and heard him speak about faith in Christ Jesus. 25But as he was discussing righteousness, self-control and the judgment to come, Felix became frightened and said, “Go away for the present, and when I find time I will summon you.” – Acts 24

The three pronged message on the topics of righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment all fall under the preaching of the Gospel.

Righteousness is the examination of the perfect standard of God’s Law.

Self-control is the truth about man that is created in the image of God and ought to reflect God’s glory, but with free will to choose to do right or wrong has come to be sinful and Unrighteous. Felix understood that he fell short of God’s standard.

The Coming Judgment is the warning to repent because a more important tribunal will be held by God which will determine heaven or hell, 2 Cor. 5:10-14.

This is how Paul spoke on the faith of Christ by making Felix see he is lost and on the path to an eternal hell. This is good preaching.

It says that Felix became afraid. Paul got straight to the most important things when he had the chance to preach to the man. And today, sinners should be afraid of coming before God still in their sins.

Felix did not respond to the Gospel, not that we know of. It says he stopped the discussion. Nevertheless, the preacher did his job. Remember that the church’s duty is to preach the Word, to plant the seed and water it; but God’s work is bringing the increase.

Through good preaching, Felix became afraid when he saw his sinfulness and lost condition when contrasted with the perfect law of the great Law giver and Judge.

Scripture to look up: Acts 4:12; 10:34-35; 3:19; 2:38-41; 5:32; 8:12; 16:31-34; 22:16.

If you have not taken up your cross and are living as a disciple of Jesus Christ, you should be afraid. Life is short and we will all die and soon stand before God’s throne to be sent to heaven or hell. Today, repent of sin and turn to God by being baptized and be united with Jesus in that watery grave. By faith, you will call on God and God will answer by cleansing your soul of the guilt of your sins. Be saved. God bless you.
