THE JUDGEMENT DAY FORETOLD, DM

13Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. 14“For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” Matthew 7

Jesus addresses the judgment of entire population of mankind and lumps them together into two groups, cf Mt 25:31ff. The majority of people are going to eternal destruction. The minority of people are going to have eternal life. Why?

This judgment against the majority is not because their fate is preordained apart from their free will. It is not because God offered salvation to only the few. In fact, Jesus says that God loves everyone and Paul told Timothy that God desires for all to be saved and Peter said that God is patient not wishing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance, John 3:16; 1 Tim. 2:4; 2 Peter 3:9f. So why are the many lost and only the few saved?

Free will. God offers salvation and lays out His plan to be saved so that “whosoever will may come”, Rev. 22:17b. People choose to sin and people choose to reject God’s invitation. As in Matthew 22 with the invitation to the wedding feast, many make excuses and reject the invite to have eternal life. In a word, sin is the reason that the majority of people are going to hell.

They are covetous, lustful, murderers, liars, cowards, drunkards, child molesters, lazy, disobedient to parents, homosexuals, fornicators, adulterers, and many other things. These sins being unrepented of and not turned away from are separating men from God and put them on the broad road that leads to destruction.
