- The Hyperdictionary defines it as “a pseudoscience claiming divination by the positions of the planets and sun and moon”. And Webster’s 1913ed. says it is “the art of judging of the influences of the stars upon human affairs, and of foretelling events by their position and aspects.”
- The online Free Dictionary says it is, “the belief that the dead communicate with the living; spiritualism.”
God says that astrology, sorcery, and divinations are evil. He said to Israel, “You felt secure in your wickedness….Let now the astrologers, those who prophesy by the stars, those who predict by the new moons, stand up and save you from what will come upon you” (Isaiah 47:10,13). When people put their faith in Christ, it is because it is reasonable and based on facts. The Bible can be read and studied allowing men to come to a consensus as to what it means. In contrast, Astrology and Spiritism are highly subjective and not given to verification.
In the first century when followers of Jesus Christ were proclaiming His resurrection from the grave, which they saw with their own eyes (the empty tomb was verifiable; that there were eyewitnesses was verifiable), the world was divided a thousand different ways with a myriad of deities. When these idol worshippers heard of Jesus Christ, they turned away from spiritism and astrology. This is what the early Christians preached: “For they themselves report about us what kind of a reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God,” (1 Thess. 1:9). The Romans and the Greeks had a multitude of gods, but they were shown to be false. Many others turned from the practice of magic arts (witchcraft) and began to confess the name of Jesus Christ (Acts 19:17-19). These people were turning from their highly emotional and wildly subjective religious practices to Jesus Christ.
Today, it seems that people are turning once again to the false gods that do not satisfy. The Hollywood tabloids seems to be especially prone to this foolishness, and the public is eating it up. In a tabloids discussion over whether Britney Spears would have a baby boy or girl, the astrologers and spiritists said the answer is written in the stars. It just takes the right person to decipher their meaning, like the following:
“Her moon is a female planet, and it’s in a male sign – Leo. The ruler of the fifth house is the moon, and it’s in a masculine sign. I’m going to say it’s a male child,” said New York City astrologer Zoltana….American astrologer Celine, and psychic Gia, claim Spears’ ‘vibrations and her high stomach’ as signs of the arrival of a baby boy, while Florida spiritual minister Reverend Dawn Casseday sees blue when looking at her. “I see a male energy connected to her… this is a spirit that she has known and been connected to for a long, long time… as far back as Egypt, even Atlantis,” Los Angeles web psychic Justine Kenzer, was quoted as saying (See full article). Such ideas should be recognized as nonsense and laughed out of sight, but they are not, even if there is a 50% chance that that they are right.
Idolatry is reliance upon and the giving of first importance to something other than God. The Apostle Paul said that idolatry is the dethroning of the only true God and it is followed by the worship of the creation (Romans 1:25-27). Paul addressed people who were just as confused as the astrologers and spiritists are today: “Being then the children of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, an image formed by the art and thought of man. 30 “Therefore having overlooked the times of ignorance, God is now declaring to men that all people everywhere should repent, 31 because He has fixed a day in which He will judge the world in righteousness through a Man whom He has appointed, having furnished proof to all men by raising Him from the dead.” 32 Now when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer, but others said, “We shall hear you again concerning this.” 33 So Paul went out of their midst.” (Acts 7:29-33).Men need to turn from worshipping the things of the natural world, and worship the true God who is supernatural. Reliance upon things like the movement and positions of stars is idolatry and the idea that Britney is carrying a child with an ancient spirit from Atlantis is a laughable. It’s too bad that these notions are taken seriously. It makes more sense to be praying to, and giving praise to, and giving to, the only true God. Anything else is idolatry.
We can rely on the Bible because it is public knowledge that was confirmed by those who spoke it. It was and is tested and proven to be true, time and again. The Bible brings unity and other blessings to those who read it with an open, sincere heart. God, who sent His Son to die for sinful man, and sent the Holy Spirit to give the Bible, is different than idols which originate from men. Christians place their faith in the Creator of all things instead of, as some do, stars, moons, the earth, and so forth. Man is not served by the “spiritist” who have nothing of substance to offer, and nothing better to do than babble on about pop stars. The true God is about righteousness, justice, and mercy, and truth is only found in His Word.
