I have seen the little booklets in the foyers of churches alongside favorite tracks on salvation and church organization. The title of this little but influential publication is Guidepost. Here is a description of its founding and mission:
“Guideposts is a non-profit organization founded in 1945 by Dr. Norman Vincent Peale and his wife, Ruth Stafford Peale dedicated to helping people from all walks of life achieve their maximum personal and spiritual potential. The organization is committed to communicating positive faith-filled principles for people everywhere to use in successful daily living.”
Peale is the “power of positive thinking” guy who employed sayings of the Bible to build people’s lives through positive thinking.
There is no problem with this unless you fall into the thinking that only “positive” things from the Bible are appropriate for edification. All of the Bible is God’s Word and it is all appropriate for teaching, edifying, and building up the body of Christ.
Don’t misunderstand what I’m saying. I would never justify “negative preaching”. I’m sure that there is something powerful and uplifting in everything God has said. So let’s speak the truth; speak all of the truth; and speak it positively. And let’s avoid all suggestions that some things in the Bible are negative, hence harmful, to spiritual growth. It is all of God’s word, and not just a few selected sayings from it, which is a guidepost for living.
