The founding fathers of the American Republic were very much aware that the government they were proposing had great promise of individual freedom but also that such a Republic could only endure if the citizens were virtuous.
“No people will tamely surrender their Liberties, nor can any be easily subdued, when knowledge is diffused and Virtue is preserved. On the Contrary, when People are universally ignorant, and debauched in their Manners, they will sink under their own weight without the Aid of foreign Invaders.” – Samuel Adams. He said somewhere else that only a virtuous people can be self-governed and that once virtue was gone then they were ready to have a master. The blessings related to individual self-determination and freedom only flourish for people who know and respect the morals restraints of God.
Moses reminded Israel of the same truth that the blessings from God would continue as long as the people obeyed His voice. I could quote the entire sixth chapter of Deuteronomy, but verses 13-15 will suffice: “13 “You shall fear only the LORD your God; and you shall worship Him and swear by His name. 14 “You shall not follow other gods, any of the gods of the peoples who surround you, 15 for the LORD your God in the midst of you is a jealous God; otherwise the anger of the LORD your God will be kindled against you, and He will wipe you off the face of the earth.” The Founding Fathers of the great experiment on the American continent recognized the same truth that freedom could last only as long as the people were worthy of such freedom. If the people turned to immorality, freedom and prosperity couldn’t possibly last. God was saying to Israel that blessings were contingent on them being virtuous. But if they turned aside into idolatry, curses would follow. Americans need to be reminded of this.
Will our nation endure? No, if God’s values are not honored this freedom cannot endure. Immoral people need and deserve the master they deserve. Freedom is possible only for a virtuous people.
