Also remember what God said to Cain: “If you do well, will not your countenance be lifted up?…” Gen 4:7

When we do wrong, we will be anxious and feel bad. When we fret about clothing or shelter before seeking God, it’s completely out of order. Jesus simply says, “do not be worried about your life” (Mt. 6:25). And of Cain it says that his “countenance” had fallen. His state of mind was apparent to God. But God doesn’t give him a pill or tell him that he’s a victim. God tells Cain what a lot of people need to hear that you are going to feel better if you do right. Proverbs says, “An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up” (Proverbs 12:25). When people are burdened down, a kind word is like medicine. But when people are worried and anxious as a result of their own foolishness and rebellion, happiness will remain elusive until they do right. Sometimes the “kind word” needs to be a loving rebuke. People are sick with anxiety because they are walking and talking against the laws of God. Happiness and contentment remain elusive until they do right. See also Philippians 4:6ff
