First, God wants all men to work. Paul wrote to the Thessalonians, “If a man won’t work, neither let him eat.” The energy, talents, and needs for living dictate that each man must labor for his own bread and for supporting his family. We are created by God to be productive. The lazy slackard is a disgrace. Solomon said in Proverbs 10:4, “Poor is he who works with a negligent hand, But the hand of the diligent makes rich.” There’s no excuse for able-bodied men to not work. None.

Second, not all work is created equal. There are many people whose work encourages immoral and destructive behaviors as in the alcohol trade and drug business. There are many ways to make a living, but some are better than others. If you make a good wage but it costs you your soul, that’s not better. If your living is earned at the costs of the relationship with your children and wife, that’s not better. If your living is a negative to the life and health of others, that’s not better. Proverbs 10:2 says, “Ill-gotten gains do not profit, But righteousness delivers from death.” Righteous living is profitable and better. If a man lets righteousness dictate his manner of life, it will be profitable to him in many ways. It will save his life, it will save his family, it will give him a good name, it will be an asset to him more valuable than gold or silver.
