1 Timothy 3:16 which says, “by common confession, great is the mystery of godliness.” I think most will attest that being godly is sometimes a mystery. In fact, many find it impossible. The rest of the passage then tells the story of Jesus, text which many agree was a typical saying of the Christians.
“He who was revealed in the flesh, Was vindicated in the Spirit,
Seen by angels, Proclaimed among the nations,
Believed on in the world, Taken up in glory.
Why when speaking of “the mystery of godliness” does Paul tell the message of Jesus Christ? Therein is the one and only answer to realizing godliness. Look at Jesus and stay fixed on Him. Hebrews 12:1ff says that we are in a Christian race and to win we must cast off the sins that entangle us. Again, it’s a mystery of how to do it. But the same answer is given again to “fix your eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of faith”.
Godliness is the Greek word EUSEBEIA, a word that relates to being pious, holy, or like God. The mystery of godliness is suddenly revealed by understanding and following the “common confession” of Jesus Christ.
Not coincidentally Paul had just spoken to the Christians about their conduct, or godliness, in the church. I see it like this. The more Jesus Christ is our passion and confession, the more “the mystery of godliness” is worked in us.
To sum up, focus on Jesus and make Him your confession. God bless you.
