GOD’S LIVING WORD, Dan Mayfield

1 Peter, chapter 1:13-25

A great many words are coming at us. But the church brings the word of God. The church carries to the world God’s word. The church is convicted to speak the way Jeremiah was do that he couldn’t hold it in, Jer 20:9.

We know that the church has departed from God when the powerfully convicting message to repent is abandoned. Preachers who tell nice stories to makethe church feel good have made their message conform to the world.

Peter reminded Christians that the Bible is not from man, but is inspired of God, 2 Peter 1:20-21. The Bible says it is of God which is why the young preachers, Timothy and Titus, were told to preach the Word, to deprive with it, and to rebuke with it, and to exhort with it, 2 Timothy 3:16-17. The church must not shrink back from teaching the easy and the hard of God’s word.

From the Peter text, the word of God is also the living word. Words of men have been written down and men have spoken billions and billions of words. But the words are forgotten. Even the greats of history are largely forgotten. And even if a few of them have their words preserved, they still have no great impact on man today. This is because their words are dead.

This is not so with the Bible. The Bible is from the mouth of God and it is living. The Hebrews writer said, “it is living and active and sharper than any two edged sword”, Hebrews 4.

The Bible is like no other words. Man is hearing a mass of words through the internet and television. The church has nothing to do with those words. The church of Christ has one job which is to speak God’s word to the world. It is why Paul says the church is “the pillar and support of truth.”

Woe to you who call yourselves Christian while playing fast and loose with God’s word. Do not add to God’s word. Do not take away from it our else God will curse you.

We praise God who has given us the Bible that is living and everlasting. We cherish it. We love to read it. We are thrilled when it is preached with power. We praise the Almighty God who has given us the Bible so we know what to believe and what to do.
