We hear the stories of children abused and abandoned. And they are terrible. Children should be loved. But mostly my experience is that parents love their own children. They dote on them. They give them things and put them in programs for development. They read to them and worry over them. Parents do care about their children. They feed and clothe them. They make sure they get their sleep and they get them to school. This is all good. But you know what most parents do not do? They do not do what God said to do
“And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.” Eph. 6:4.
Fathers and parents are told to bring their children up in the Lord’s discipline and instruction. Parents hardly know the Lord enough to know what is the Lord’s nurture and admonition. We can coddle them, sing and read to them, and we can sign them up for the latest sports and educational development programs, but do we teach our children to walk in the ways of the Lord? Most do not. That is what is missing and that is what deserves more attention.
