“16Moreover, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, since the LORD has said to you, ‘You shall never again return that way.’ 17“He shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.” Deut 17

It is not a harmless thing to travel back to Egypt to do commerce and make friends. Solomon did this very thing. He married an Egyptian. Engaged in commerce with Egypt. Made friends with Egypt. Likewise we are not to make pact with immoral people and with the things of our broken past because our heart turn back to them and will turn away from God.

Rationalizing won’t do. God says do not go back to Egypt. God shows us that there are paths to avoid. He shows us we ought to stay away from evil companions. And we are not smarter than God to somehow make it all acceptable.
