WHY THEY GET THE ‘SCARIEST VERSE’ WRONG?
I was listening to a thoughtful and passionate little video on Facebook about Matthew 7:22 being the scariest verse in the Bible.
It says, 22Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’
It certainly is a scary thought to think you were on the right track only to get to the end of your life to find out Jesus never knew you.
But here is how the little video piece got it wrong. The man chose to make this about having love, intimacy and passion for Jesus. The man points out what Jesus said in vs 23 that Jesus does not know workers of iniquity. It’s true, that unless you truly love Jesus, all of your works will be for naught. But that is not what Jesus is asking for. Mt. 7:22 is so scary because genuine and thoughtful people miss the point.
The answer to being known by Jesus is found in verse 7:21 that says, ‘not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord’, but HE THAT DOES THE WILL OF MY FATHER IN HEAVEN.’ The man in the video misses the point of the last verses of the chapter that a wise man who builds his house on the rock is not the super passionate, emotional, in love with Jesus person, but is the one who ‘hears my words and does them’.
What is scary is to miss the real point of Mt. 7:22. Verse 22 is addressing people who ARE passionate about Jesus, but they did not do what God said to do. Yes, it is true that unless we love, we won’t be saved, but the point of Mt. 7:22 should not be missed like this man did. The video missed and failed to see the a lot of religious people will be lost because they do not do the will of God.
