The Holy Spirit is God. First introduced in Genesis 1
All 3 Persons of the Godhead existed from the days of eternity; all 3 were active in Genesis 1 and the creation.
“1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2And the earth was a formless and desolate emptiness, and darkness was over the [b]surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the [c]surface of the waters.” Gen 1:1-2
The 3 were pictured in the Old Testament, see Isaiah 48:16.
“16“Come near to Me, listen to this: From the beginning I have not spoken in secret, From the time it took place, I was there. And now the Lord GOD has sent Me, and His Spirit.” Isa. 48:16
The 3 were present at the baptism of Jesus; all.
“16And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him; 17and behold, a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” Mt. 3:17,17
The 3 are depicted in Acts 2.
The Holy Spirit was poured out according to Joel 2. Jesus was seated at the right hand of the Father. And the Father was adding to the church those who were being saved: who repented and were baptized.
The 3 are important in the Great Commission baptism.
“19Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them inb the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,” Mt 28:19
The 3 are represented in the inspired New Testament Letters such as by Paul. A properly worded prayer may pronounce the blessings attached to the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit.
“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you.” 2 Cor. 13:14; cf Philippans 2:1.
So there is fellowship with the Holy Spirit.
To sum up so far, the Holy Spirit is God, the 3rd person of the Godhead. Peter told Ananias and Saphira that when they lied to the Holy Spirit, they lied to God, Acts 6:3,4.
What does the Holy Spirit do?
The Holy Spirit indwells every Christian. Acts 2:38 says when you believe, repent and are baptized, you receive the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
“19Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, 20for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.” 1 Cor. 6:18,19
Only a saved person has the Holy Spirit dwelling in him. If a person has not repented and been baptized, he does not have the Holy Spirit; and he does not belong to God.
“9You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.” Romans 8:9.
If you deny the Holy Spirit, you deny God. If you deny and ignore Jesus Christ, you deny God. All 3 continue working and must not be denied.
The Holy Spirit is God’s stamp or sign upon the saved that is the precursor to eternal life.
“13In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14who is the guaranteed of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it to the praise of his glory.” Eph. 1:13,14.
The Holy Spirit is the seal of God on the saved for their salvation. If a person doesn’t have the indwelling Holy Spirit, he doesn’t have a seal for salvation.
The indwelling Holy Spirit helps us with our prayers.
“26Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. 27And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, becauseg the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” Romans 8:26,27
And this part is mysterious, but Jesus said the Holy Spirit would convict the world of sin.
“8And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:” John 16:8.
The work of the Holy Spirit is the Word of God, the Bible. But there might be another aspect to this convicting by the H.S. The Bible says that we instinctively know right and wrong so that people are without excuse. It may be that this is an actual work of the Holy Spirit, even convicting the unsaved to know what is right and wrong.
Though we may not be able to fully grasp how the one true God is made of the three person of the Godhead, it doesn’t follow that we deny its veracity.
