In the parable of the ten virgins, an interesting detail about the Kingdom of Heaven is explained. The virgins are those who are waiting for the return of the bridegroom. In other words they are the people who are waiting on the return of Jesus Christ. This parable isn’t addressing the common unbelieving world and their fate The parable is just addressing those who are remaining pure, hence they are like virgins, and how they must remain faithful during the the wait for Christ return. It turns out according to the parable that some believers are not vigilant.. They are neglectful of their duties, so when Christ returns, they are not ready. Because they were not ready, when Jesus returns they are locked out of the happy return and Jesus says to them, I didn’t know you.
In the book of Revelation, these lamps are explicitly identified as the “seven Spirits of God,” the common Jewish speak for the fullness of the Holy Spirit. In Zechariah 4, when the man of God was shown the lampstands, God explains, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel, saying, ‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the LORD of armies.”
Reflecting on this parable lesson, I realize today is a good day to have plenty of oil in my lamp and have the wick trimmed. Have I been neglectful? Am I walking by the Spirit. Am I daily led by the Spirit? Or have I been living with sin and quenched the Spirit of God? For surely if I do not have the light of the Holy Spirit in me, by neglecting I have been walking in the darkness of sin.
Parable of Ten Virgins
1“Then the kingdom of heaven will be comparable to ten virgins, who took their lamps and went out to meet the groom. 2Five of them were foolish, and five were prudent. 3For when the foolish took their lamps, they did not take extra oil with them; 4but the prudent ones took oil in flasks with their lamps. 5Now while the groom was delaying, they all became drowsy and began to sleep. 6But at midnight [a]there finally was a shout: ‘Behold, the groom! Come out to meet him.’ 7Then all those virgins got up and trimmed their lamps. 8But the foolish virgins said to the prudent ones, ‘Give us some of your oil, because our lamps are going out.’ 9However, the prudent ones answered, ‘No, there most certainly would not be enough for us and you too; go instead to the merchants and buy some for yourselves.’ 10But while they were [b]on their way to buy the oil, the groom came, and those who were ready went in with him to the wedding feast; and the door was shut. 11Yet later, the other virgins also came, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open up for us.’ 12But he answered, ‘Truly I say to you, I do not know you.’ 13Be on the alert then, because you do not know the day nor the hour. – Mt. 25
