SEEKING TO BE UNDERSTOOD BY THE WORLD? ” For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.” 1 Jn 3:1b The world has suppressed the truth of God in unrighteousness, Rom 1:18. It has squashed down and tamped down and driven out all of their thoughts of God. Everything of God that would bother and prick which would lead them to repentance they have blinded their minds to and calloused their hearts to so that they have no receptivity to Him. Having thoroughly erased God from their mind, they look at God’s children as very strange.
“13 Do not be surprised, brethren, if the world hates you.” 1 Jn 3:13
The world did not know Jesus Christ and the world does not understand the follower of Jesus Christ. They erased from their minds the words and deeds of Jesus Christ, they erased all reason, so that they could without conscience take up the hammer and nail Him to a cross. They ignored all of the evidence to fill up their faces with rage to cry “Crucify Him, Crucify Him.” Do we think these people are going to understand and love us?
“By this the children of God and the children of the devil are obvious: anyone who does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor the one who does not love his brother.” 1 Jn 3:10
Satan isn’t about to love us. And Satan’s children aren’t about to either. John wrote that, “…the whole world lies in the power of the evil one“, 1 John 5:19. These are rebels against God. Under the power and influence of the devil, they rise up each day with no thought of God and His will. They move through this life to satisfy their flesh. After they please their eyes, they move to pleasing their tongue, and after that they move to please their ears. They fill up their senses with pleasure and they do it without constraint. No boundaries and no rules. The children of the devil believe the lies and they become liars. Their lives are lies, promising pleasure but bringing death.
“promising them freedom while they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by what a man is overcome, by this he is enslaved.“, 2 Pt 2:19
Do we try to make sense of the world and do we try to justify a little of the world in our lives? The world is at war against God. The world is at war with the family, the church, and with God. It is spiritual warfare that is being fought and many Christians do not know or want to acknowledge it. Is it not a sad thing that the world hates Christ and it hates us, but too many are entrusting their children to the world? “Well, the world isn’t so bad.” God has heard the sentiment and rejects it. The world is going to be burned up with fire, 2 Pt 3:9ff. God is going to judge the world in righteousness and He will separate the wheat from the chaff and will cast the unrighteous into hell. And do we want to be understood and liked by the world?
15 Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17 The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”, 1 Jn 2:15-17.
We should not be surprised to learn that the world does not like Christians. The world will entice us at first. “Come on, practice a little sin with me.” But we dare not listen to the world. Later, the world will devour our souls. We who have fixed our hope on God must not listen to the world and allow our affections to be given to it. God loves us and we need to give God our love. It means fixing our hope on Him and living a purified life. Our affections are set on Him because He loved us first. When you are right with God, do not be surprised to see that the world does not love or know you. You are not going to be understood by the world.
