‘Ye offspring of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh. The good man out of his good treasure bringeth forth good things:and the evil man out of his evil treasure bringeth forth evil things. And I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment. For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.’ Mt 12:34-37.
Careless words are spoken to win the argument in the moment. Compromising words are spoken to foster prejudice against our opponents. Lying words reveal the corrupt, evil treasure stored up in a man. Like Paul spoke of in Romans 1, wrathful judgment is coming on those ‘who suppress the truth in unrighteousness.’
Jesus’ words are powerful and they convict us all to be honest to the Truth no matter the outcome. Will we rile the leaders? Will we invite trouble from an ‘influential’ member? Will we be called petty or legalistic? Will we make it more likely that a move is coming? The Truth is more important that all of these things. Speak the Truth in love and God will have his way.
