“15A single witness shall not rise up against a man on account of any iniquity or any sin which he has committed; on the evidence of two or three witnesses a matter shall be confirmed. 16″If a malicious witness rises up against a man to accuse him of wrongdoing, 17then both the men who have the dispute shall stand before the LORD, before the priests and the judges who will be in office in those days.…” Deut 19:15ff
Moses said there are malicious witnesses. The Law warned against bearing false witness. Moses said the false witness will suffer the punishment that would have come up the innocent person. A false witness will not go unpunished from the Lord. God does not want the innocent to suffer for what they did not do. And so he says there must be more witnesses.
One person shall not be convicted on the testimony of one person. There needs to be other witnesses. So are there other witnesses to settle the matter? What if there are no other eye witnesses?
The Witness of Character.
“A good name is to be more desired than great wealth,” Pro. 22:1. A good name is a powerful witnesses of the kind of person you are. Do you have a good name that says honest, diligent, faithful? The name brings up a mental picture of the person. And the picture is the one I have made through my life.
A character witness is defined as, “a person who attests to another’s moral conduct and good reputation in a court of law.” Character is what people see in you. Character is the other you that goes ahead of you before you have arrived, and it remains after you have gone. It is what your life says about you to others. Are you faithful to the Lord? It will show in the conduct of your life. John said, “3 By this we know that we have come to know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 The one who says, “I have come to know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him;” 1 Jn 2:3-4. You have been testifying about the love you have for others. Are you faithful in all your ways? The life tells the story. When we neglect our character, we set ourselves up to fall.
Sometimes there is only one “eye” witness to the crime, but if the character “witness” of friends and family says there’s nothing to the story, then it is the witness of one’s own life which exonerates him.
The Witness of God.
The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, gentleness, faithfulness, and self-control. These are the witness of God in one’s life. Gal. 5:22f. When these attributes are yours, faith, moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love, “they render you neither useless nor unfruitful, 2 Pt 1:5ff.
The powerful testimony
This is one reason to always keep our character holy because the other witnesses, those who bear witness to our lives will be called to the witness stand to testify for our against us. Keep your name good. Run from sin. Look at all of your ways to keep them upright because your life will testify for or against you.
Said in love.
