According to an atheist, Scalfari, who interviewed the him, the Pope does not believe evil people will burn in hell but rather will be turned into nothing: which is the doctrine of annihilation.
“Scalfari: What happens to that lost soul? Will it be punished? And how? The response of Francis is distinct and clear (netta e chiara): there is no punishment, but the destruction/annihilation of that soul. [The Italian word is annullamento, literally, “turned into nothing”, meaning here the same as the more usual Italian word for annihilation, annientamento] All the others will participate in the beatitude of living in the presence of the Father. The souls that are destroyed/annihilated will not take part in that banquet; with the death of the body their journey is finished. And this is the motivation of the Church’s missionary activity: to save the lost. And it is also the reason why Francis is a Jesuit to the end.”1
What is worse than being drowned in the sea or never being born? Eternal punishment that Jesus calls hell, with fire and gnashing of teeth.
“whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. ” Mt 18:5f
“For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.” Mk. 14:21.
According to God’s righteous justice, a quick death in the sea is not punishment enough. The annihilation of the soul isn’t punishment. These would be better than is deserved for being a stumbling block to others by hindering them from coming to God. Never existing is better than what a person will get who betrays Jesus Christ.
“28Anyone who has set aside the Law of Moses dies without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. 29How much severer punishment do you think he will deserve who has trampled under foot the Son of God, and has regarded as unclean the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified, and has insulted the Spirit of grace? 30For we know Him who said, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY.” And again, “THE LORD WILL JUDGE HIS PEOPLE.” 31It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” Heb. 10:28ff
Those who teach the doctrine of Annihilation, as the Pope did last week (2018), are teaching heresy.
